I really like that. I like a good meal and a chat with friends. I like getting out into the garden with my mower, chainsaw and whipper snipper. This is a photo of my son, Julian, who toured the world with the seven-piece gypsy punk band The Barons of Tang for years.
They had the most amazing experiences. One year, they couch surfed across 25 states of America, because fellow musos would put them up.
I would have loved to have been able to do that. Julian now looks after the sound at The Gaso, aka The Gasometer Hotel in Collingwood, so is still in the industry he loves.
My daughter, Georgina, is an artist who creates art installations. She started with hand-stitched tapestries: one of a room that popped out of the wall took six months to do and has now been acquired by the NGV. Don and I often wonder where these creative creatures came from, seeing as he was a chemical engineer and I taught maths and chemistry. These traditional Japanese sandals are precious because they were given to me by Aratani San and his wife, Keiko San.
Aratani worked with Don for more than 25 years on oil and gas projects around the world. He was quite a character who was great company. He laughed a lot. In , Aratani was attending the opening ceremony of a British-Norwegian gas plant in Algeria when he was taken hostage and executed by Mali terrorists protesting French intervention in their country. He was one of 37 foreign hostages killed. When you read about incidents like this, you often disconnect from it, but even though any kind of terrorism is shocking, knowing someone who was involved brings it really close.
Some of my friends — much to my surprise — have been awarded Australia Day gongs. But I peaked with this badge in It was downhill from then on! It gave me a good education. I had some wonderful teachers there, who I still remember to this day.

It was actually great training because, unlike computers, you had to be organised and think about what you were going to say before you started typing. So, the teapot is a little reminder of how I used to write. Memory jogger: useless as a teapot, but a reminder of how Cue used to write. My dad, Jack Meehan, played for St Kilda, along with my two uncles, after they returned from serving overseas in the war in the s.
